Do we have anything in place concerning guys who have retired but decide to pull a "Brett Favre"?
I asked because of Mike Mussina.

There is nothing in place that I know of. We have two possibilities that I can see.
One, whoever last owned him retains his rights if that player decides to unretire. If the player unretires, at that time the owner has first dibs to either pick him up or let him become free game.
Two, the owner only retains that players rights as long as they don't release him. In your case, you've owned his rights all offseason in case he decided to unretire, but since you've officially released him today you've now lost those rights and he becomes free game if he ever decides to play ball again.
I have no idea which is better. It's pretty simple in professional sports because they have contract lengths. If the player retires while under contract that team retains his rights if he ever wants to play again, but if he retires after the contract expires he can sign with anyone who wants him.
I suppose I prefer the first rule, but I don't think it's too big a deal since that type of thing rarely happens. Still, we should have something in place just in case, so we'll see how everyone else feels.

I would think we would have to go with the first rule, or add something to the rosters, because we can't expect a team to carry a retired player and their contract if they are not playing.
