Jerry's question brought up an interesting idea. I'm just throwing this out there for future reference, as it's probably way too late to make any such modifications to the league for this year. It's not even something I'm completely sure how I feel about, but it's just food for thought.
We could add actual contracts to this league, meaning we have players signed for a certain number of years before they hit free agency. It may be fairly complicated to get started, since this league didn't originally have contracts, but once it got rolling it should be pretty simple. I have no idea if it's even a good idea, but if anyone out there wants an added sense of "realism," it's probably the way to go.
My very preliminary ideas would have us all having a certain number of contracts we can give out initially. For example, we could have something like: 3 players @ 5 years, 3 players @ 4 years, 4 players @ 3 years, unlimited players @ 2 years, and unlimited players @ 1 year. Naturally, this would change a great deal about the league. It would do away with the free agent draft and in it's place we would have a free agent auction every year, where we bid on players for their services. This would also do away with real-life player contracts, as eventually every player with have their "bidded" contract so our league would be like a parallel universe as all the players are the same as MLB, but all the contracts are different. This would also make the trade deadline more significant, as a team performing poorly can trade a player in the last year of his contract to a playoff bound team for prospects or other players with lengthier contracts.
This is all very preliminary, but I would think the contract list I threw out there would only be to start things off. After that, one could give out as many 5 and 4 year contracts as one wishes during the free agency period, it would be at each owners discretion. That list would only be to get things rolling.
Now this is all just an idea, so please treat it as such. It's only something I would be behind if everyone liked it, as it may be too much for some people. I'm not proposing we do it this year either, as we've already got everything set up nicely for what we're doing and I don't want to screw that up. It's just something interesting to think about is all.
