I don't know how everyone else feels about the 5x5 scoring, but I wouldn't mind seeing something a little different. Now, the 5x5 works just fine, but it seems a little bland. Baseball is a sport all about statistics and the 5x5 scoring only scratches the surface of all the statistics out there.
Last year, I was in a league that had a 10x9 scoring system. I'm not saying we need to go that far because there were some unusual statistics in the 10x9. The hitting categories were runs, total hits, homeruns, runs batted in, stolen bases, walks, intentional walks, hit-by-pitch, average, and on-base-percentage. The pitching categories were wins, complete games, shutouts, holds, strikeouts, saves, ERA, WHIP, and K/9.
As I said, that was a little bit crazy, but I will admit it was a total blast. It was the most fun I've ever had in a league because it was so in-depth with so many categories to think about. Players before that were borderline worthless actually became useful, the biggest example, Barry Bonds. His BB's and IBB's were a huge asset.
Like I said, my league's 10x9 scoring system was probably a little bit extreme. Things like IBB's and HBP are kind of cool, but more of a pain than anything else. However, I definately think we should add some categories to our league, like a 7x7 or 8x8. I personally really liked having complete games and shutouts as two pitching categories. Obviously, most weeks were a tie because neither team would get one, but it really valued complete game shutouts a lot. If your pitcher got one, you were almost guaranteed two category wins that week, which was fine because they were so rare.
My personal suggestion would be having an 8x9 league. With the hitting categories being runs, total hits, homeruns, run batted in, stolen bases, walks, average, and on-base-percentage. And the pitching categories being wins, complete games, shutouts, saves, strikeouts, holds, ERA, WHIP, and K/9. I know having an 8x9 is unbalanced and some people don't like that because it gives more value to pitchers because of more categories, but that's not really true because CG and SHO's are two of the pitching categories and they're so rare. I like the K/9, but you could take it out if you don't like it and I really love the holds category because it actually gives value to middle relievers and set-up guys. That's really cool because there are some awesome middle relievers out there. And things like walks and OBP for hitters are really important, you could even throw OPS in there if you wanted. A guy who hits .300 with a .320 OBP is just as valuable as a guy who hits .300 with a .400 OBP with 5x5, that doesn't make any sense. The regular 5x5 scoring really diminishes the value of those great hitters who draw 100+ walks a year and have great OBP's.
Anyway, it's just my suggestion. I know when everyone joined this league they joined it expecting the scoring to be 5x5, so I understand if no one wants to change the scoring. But, I really think you're missing out on a whole lot of fun by using the standard 5x5 scoring system. I hope you all at least listen to what I'm saying because I had a so much fun last year in that 10x9 league. I just want to see everybody enjoy this league as much as possible. Sorry for making such a huge post, but I wanted to explain this so no one would get confused.
